Aim Deep‐sea hydrothermal vents have now been reported along all active mid‐ocean ridges and back‐arc basins, but the boundaries of biogeographic entities remain questionable owing to methodological issues. Here we examine biogeographic patterns of the vent fauna along the East Pacific Rise (EPR) and determine the relative roles of regional and local factors on the distribution of biodiversity associated with mussel beds along a poorly explored zone, the southern EPR (SEPR). Location East Pacific Rise. Methods A species list of macrobenthic invertebrates along the EPR was compiled from the literature and supplemented with data recovered during the French research cruise BIOSPEEDO carried out in 2004 along the SEPR. Biogeographic patterns were assessed by combining the identification of morphological species with a molecular barcoding approach. A multivariate regression tree (MRT) analysis was performed to identify any geographic breaks, and an empirical distribution of species richness was compared with predictions provided by a mid‐domain effect model. Macrofaunal community structure associated with mussel beds along the SEPR was analysed in relation to environmental factors using cluster and canonical redundancy analyses. Results Sequencing of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene revealed the occurrence of several cryptic species complexes along the EPR, with the equator separating the southern and northern clades. Furthermore, during the BIOSPEEDO cruise at least 10 still unnamed species were collected between 7°25′ S and 21°33′ S. The shift in community structure identified by MRT analysis was located south of 17°34′ S or south of 13°59′ S, depending on the data used, suggesting that the southern part of the SEPR (17°25′–21°33′ S) constitutes a biogeographic transition zone in the vent fauna along the EPR. At a regional scale, latitude combined with the type of venting was significantly correlated with the community structure associated with mussel beds. Main conclusions Together, the molecular data, in situ observations, and the distribution of species suggest that the high diversity of vent fauna species presently observed between 17°25′ S and 21°33′ S is probably a result of the overlap of several distinct biogeographic provinces. We argue that this area thus constitutes a biogeographic vent fauna transition zone along the EPR.  相似文献

Deep‐sea hydrothermal vents provide ephemeral habitats for animal communities that depend on chemosynthetic primary production. Sporadic volcanic and tectonic events destroy local vent fields and create new ones. Ongoing dispersal and cycles of extirpation and colonization affect the levels and distribution of genetic diversity in vent metapopulations. Several species exhibit evidence for stepping‐stone dispersal along relatively linear, oceanic, ridge axes. Other species exhibit very high rates of gene flow, although natural barriers associated with variation in depth, deep‐ocean currents, and lateral offsets of ridge axes often subdivide populations. Various degrees of impedance to dispersal across such boundaries are products of species‐specific life histories and behaviours. Though unrelated to the size of a species range, levels of genetic diversity appear to correspond with the number of active vent localities that a species occupies within its range. Pioneer species that rapidly colonize nascent vents tend to be less subdivided and more diverse genetically than species that are slow to establish colonies at vents. Understanding the diversity and connectivity of vent metapopulations provides essential information for designing deep‐sea preserves in regions that are under consideration for submarine mining of precious metals.  相似文献

Barnacle cypris larvae show high morphological variation in the organs used in search of and attaching to a substratum. This variation may represent adaptation to the habitat of the species. Here, we studied SEM level morphologies of cypris antennular sensory and attachment organs in a deep‐sea vent endemic species (Neoverruca sp.) and a vent/seep inhabiting species (Ashinkailepas seepiophila). We compare them with three species from other environments. The antennular morphologies of Neoverruca sp. and A. seepiophila were similar, which is consistent with recent molecular studies showing a close relationship of the two species. The setation pattern of the antennules was very conservative among species from various environments. In contrast, striking differences were observed in the structure of the attachment organ (the third antennular segment). Neoverruca sp. and A. seepiophila had no velum or a skirt surrounding the attachment disc on the third segment, while other cirripede cyprids almost always have either of these structures. In addition, both cyprids of A. seepiophila and Neoverruca sp. had the attachment disc angled toward the substratum, whereas it faces distally in cyprids from hard bottom inhabiting barnacles. We suggest that both velum/skirt and the angle of the attachment disc play an important role, when the antennules are contacting the substratum during surface exploration. Differences in attachment organ structures may be highly adaptive, enabling cirripede species to enter new habitats during evolution. J. During the BIOACCESS Japanese cruises (1996 & 1998), active hydrothermalism and associated vent fauna were studied on the South-eastern Rift of Manus Basin (South-western Pacific). In the PACMANUS vent field, a conspicuous vent fauna was sampled, including an actinostolid sea anemone (Actiniaria) belonging to an undescribed genus and species. Pacmanactis hashimotoi gen. et spec. nov. is here described, and represents the 9th sea anemone reported from hydrothermal vents.  相似文献

The steep biogeochemical gradients near deep sea hydrothermal vents provide various niches for microbial life. Here we present biosignatures of such organisms enclosed in a modern and an ancient hydrothermal sulfide deposit (Turtle Pits, Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Recent; Yaman Kasy, Russia, Silurian). In the modern sulfide we found high amounts of specific bacterial and archaeal biomarkers with δ13C values between ?8 and ?37‰ VPDB. Our data indicate the presence of thermophilic members of the autotrophic Aquificales using the reductive tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) cycle as well as of methanogenic and chemolithoheterotrophic Archaea. In the ancient sample, most potential biomarkers of thermophiles were obscured by compounds derived from allochthonous organic matter (OM), except for an acyclic C40 biphytane and its C39 breakdown product. Both samples contained high amounts of unresolved complex mixtures (UCM) of hydrocarbons. Apparently, OM in the sulfides had to withstand high thermal stress, indicated by highly mature hopanes, steranes, and cheilanthanes with up to 41 carbon atoms.  相似文献

Thermophilic and metal-oxidizing bacteria were identified in shallow hydrothermal vents on the western Mexican coast. The role of these bacteria in biomineralization processes observed in the vents is explained, and the effect of the vents on biodiversity of prokaryotes is discussed. Research was done at two shallow hydrothermal vent sites: Bahía Concepción (BC) in the Baja California Peninsula and Punta Mita (PM), on the central Pacific coast. Temperature at the sediments proximal to the vents was similar, but the redox potentials (0.5 V in BC and ?0.3 V in PM) and pH (6.2 in BC and as low as 4.5 in PM) differed. The composition of the discharged water ranged from nearly seawater to lower-salinity fluids, and the gas phase was mainly CO2 at BC and N2 and CH4 at PM. The study focuses on the biogeochemical processes related to the different species of bacteria present in the studied sites, which are involved in the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM), seawater sulfate reduction, and metal oxidation. The detected bacterial lineages represented typical deep vent species, which disproves a previous hypothesis that proposed that different consortia were populating deep and shallow hydrothermal vents. The results obtained here show that the main parameter affecting the bacterial groups present in shallow vents was the redox potential: gamma-, delta-, and epsilon proteobacteria as well as Bacteriodetes are present under the oxidizing conditions of BC, and Thermotogae, Aquificae, and Planctomycetes are present in PM. Sunlight abundance favored the prevalence of halophilic and Chlorofleaxae bacteria in both areas.  相似文献

We have combined mineralogy, organic geochemistry and molecular microbiology to study hydrothermal deposits from Solfatara Crater, a geologically young volcanic formation (~4,000 years old) displaying hot (45–95°C) and acidic (pH 1.7) mud pools and fumaroles. The search for inorganic (mineral) biosignatures revealed the presence of delicate structures, most likely mineralized extracellular polymers (EPSs), and the presence of potential biologically induced minerals: sulfides, sulfates (barite and alunite), elemental sulfur, and iron oxides. Geochemical analyses revealed a low total organic carbon content, 0.13 to 0.53%, displaying δ13C values from ?17.09 to ?27.39‰, and total nitrogen contents from 0.03 to 0.12%, which are characteristic of hydrothermal systems and suggest the presence of autotrophic carbon fixation. Lipid biomarker analysis showed the presence of hopanoids and linear alkanes, and the absence of detectable steroids, implying the occurrence of bacteria in our samples. We constructed 16S rRNA gene libraries from the environmental samples. Most environmental sequences obtained were affiliated to the Alpha- and Betaproteobacteria (Hydrogenophilus-like), the Acidobacteria, and to a lesser extent, the Gammaproteobacteria and Actinobacteria. When known, the closest cultivated relatives were often thermophilic or thermotolerant bacteria oxidizing iron, hydrogen, or methane/methanol, suggesting an important microbial contribution to the formation of biominerals.  相似文献

Cytherella maremensis sp. n., belonging to the family Cytherellidae, is described as new from a hydrothermal vent, located in the west of Marmara Island on the North Anatolian Fault crossing the Sea of Marmara. It was collected from a sediment core 55 m below sea level. Cytherella maremensis sp. n. is clearly separated from closely related species by its shape, length-height ratio and ornamentation.  相似文献
